Cape Town has produced many of South African football players.

Cape Town has produced many of South Africa's top recent internationals such as Shaun Bartlett, Benni McCarthy, Andre Arendse and many others who played top football in Europe.

The city has also produced many other top footballers that went on to play for some of the top clubs in Europe. Former Manchester United player, Quinton Fortune is one such example. Fortune signed for United in 1999 from Spanish side, Atletico Madrid.

South Africa's all-time top goalscorer, Benni McCarthy has enjoyed international success, winning the UEFA Champions League with FC Porto under the leadership of Jose Mourinho. He also won a Portuguese top flight Golden Boot. McCarthy has been one of the country's most celebrated players in the last 10 years.

Bartlett played for FC Zurich in 1998 and then made the move to Charlton Athletic in 2000. During his tenure at Charlton, he helped the club consolidate their position in the English top flight.

The now defunct Hellenic FC was the first Cape Town side to win a championship in 1971, soon followed by Cape Town City. In 1995, Cape Town Spurs swept the board and did the double, claiming the league and knockout cup crowns. All three clubs have since folded.

Ajax Cape Town and Santos, champions in 2002, continue to keep professional football alive in the city. Ajax Cape Town is a satellite club of Dutch giants, Ajax Amsterdam and the partnership between the two clubs has seen many players launching their careers in Europe. Those include current Everton star, Steven Pienaar, Bafana Bafana captain, Aaron Mokoena, McCarthy and many others.

Cape Town has a number of clubs that compete in the country's First Division League. They are Ikapa Sporting, FC Cape Town, Hanover Park and Vasco da Gama.

From it's humble beginnings in 1930 the Soccer World Cup has grown to be one of the most spectacular sporting events in the world. The 2010 World Cup promises to be the planet's biggest sporting event ever. Well over a billion people are expected to follow the month long tournament between the world's top 32 soccer playing nations.

The World Cup is the most important competition in international soccer and is organised by FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association), the sport's governing body.

The tournament takes place every four years. The previous tournament was held in 2006 in Germany and Italy won the World Cup. 2010 will be the first time that the final tournament will be hosted by an African nation.

More than 160 national teams take part in the regional (Continental Zone) qualifying rounds to qualify as one of the 32 teams that will take part in finals.

Kersfees - As ons maar net kan besef….

Daarom sê Hy, as Hy in die wêreld inkom: Slagoffer en spysoffer wou U nie hê nie, maar U het vir My 'n liggaam berei. Brandoffers en sondoffers het U nie behaag nie.
Toe het Ek gesê: Kyk, Ek kom--in die boekrol is dit van My geskrywe--om u wil te doen, o God. (Heb.10:5-7)

Die sticker Jesus is the Reason for the Season is baie gepas om ons in te lig waaroor Kersfees inderdaad gaan. Tog slaan ons steeds die bal mis as ons beplanninge en optrede ver te kort skiet as dit kom by die verheerliking van Christus in die periode. Ek wens ons kan die wysheid bekom om die opoffering, liefde, diepte, die genade van Kersfees te verstaan. Miskien kan ‘n menslike illustrasie ons nader laat beweeg tot die liefdesdaad.

Verlange, vermisting, trane, eensaamheid, verlies, ens. is nie aspekte wat met Kersfees ge-assosieer word nie. God word soms kwalik geneem en verwyt vir die ervaringe gedurende Kersfees. Hoekom moet dit so wees vra ons? As ons maar net besef het, dat dit is juis wat die Godheid ervaar het toe die Seun ge-offer was vir ons op die eerste Kersfees!

Ons moet besef dat die ongehoorsaamheid van die mens, wat die sondeval veroorsaak het, het groot skade berokken aan die hele skepping. Tot vandag ervaar ons die nagevolge van die aksie. Hoe gemaak om die situasie te oorkom en reg te stel?
Wel, offerhande was ‘n moontlike oplossing (dit is altyd goed om vergifnis te vra en berou te toon) en het van die sonde uitgedelg, maar die angel was nog steeds daar! Die loon van die sonde is die dood!(Rom.6:23). Hoe nou gemaak? Iemand moet boet! {Ons dring vandag op verskeie fronte aan op geregtigheid en eintlik vra ons vir iemand om te boet! Maar wat van my/ons eie oortredinge?}

Die eerste Kersfees begin die ommeswaai in lewensuitkyk wanneer Jesus kom om te boet! Ons sonde neem HY op Hom. Jesus bring herstel, Hy bring versoening, nuwe moontlikhede! Kersfees word volbring in/op Golgotha, maar in afwagting sing die engele: EER aan God in die hoogste hemele en vrede op aarde vir die mense in wie HY ‘n welbehae het (Luk.2:14).

Kersfees herinner ons aan die groot Liefde wat God vir ons gehad het, steeds het en sal he. Mag ons hierdie Liefde en kanse nie versmaai nie. Want julle is duur gekoop. Verheerlik God dan in julle liggaam en in julle gees wat aan God behoort (1Kor 6:20).

‘n Geseende Kersfees word u en u familie toegebid. Kom ons gee om vir mekaar soos Christus die voorbeeld gestel het. Word prakties hierdie Kersfees in u geloof. Reik uit na ander. Laat u liefde daadwerklik deurbreek in die lewens van u naaste.

Die aand van die kompetisie was ‘n groot sukses en het vreugde in ons almal se harte gebring om te sien hoeveel talent in ons dorp is. Net ‘n regstelling dat die jaar se kompetisie nie ‘n Mej. Karoo Marathon was nie, maar wel ‘n Mej. Laingsburg.

KAROO MARATHON NUUS SEPTEMBER 2009

Baie geluk aan die organiseerders, ‘’ Die Laingsburg Team ‘’, atlete, borge en Laingsburg Gemeenskap vir ‘n wonderlike en suksesvolle marathon. Groot dank ook aan ons Hemelse Vader vir ’n suksesvolle en ongeluksvrye marathon . Ons Gebede is verhoor. Sonder Hom sou ons dit nie kon maak nie.

Die 39ste Karoo marathon was die suksesvolle marathon wat Laingsburg nog ooit opgelewer het. Die verskillende wedlope het baie goed afgeloop. Die eerste drie atlete wat die 10km gewen het, was nogal al drie Laingsburgers. Hulle het die wedloop gemaklik binne 42 minute voltooi. Geluk aan Christopher Oosthuizen , ( 1ste ) Jeandre Alexander ( 2de ) en Griffon Maarman vir die 3de plek in die 10km. In die 10km wedloop het 25 atlete voltooi.

Die eerste drie atlete wat die 21,1km wedloop voltooi het binne 1uur en 20 minute voltooi. 1ste plek : Fabian Faro van Mitchellsplain, 2de plek: Clifford Drury van MR Price WP en die 3de plek was Kenneth Vermeulen van Spoornet atletiek klub. Die prysuitdeling van hierdie twee wedlope het stiptelik om kwart oor tien begin waarna ons ’n vinnige blaaskansie geneem het .

Lucas Nonyana, wat ook die Karoo marathon in 2005 gewen het, het weer die marathon gewen, en ook sy tyd verbeter met 2min en 51 sekondes. Frans Kutu wat ook van Nedbank het in die tweede plek geeindig en Zwelithini Vaphi van Germiston het in die derde plek geeindig.

Die vroue het vir ’n lekker verrassing gesorg toe Linah Mhlongo in die algehele 9de plek as die eerste vrou die marathon voltooi het . Dit is die eerste keer in die geskiedenis van die Karoo Ulta, dat ’n vrou in die eerste tien eindig. Xoliswa Bici al die pad van Transkei was in die tweede plek en Martha Pretorius was in die derde plek.

Baie geluk aan René Smith wat as eerste Laingsburg dame die Karoo Ultra voltooi het. Ek hoop jy is ’n aansporing vir Laingsburg se dames. Die eerste Laingsburg man was Johannes Spannenberg, die tweede een was Piet Plaatjies en die derde Laingsburger was Hendrik Pieterse. Die Laingsburgers het dus ook die Span beker in gepalm . Baie geluk aan al die atlete van Laingsburg atletiek klub. Julle maak ons baie trots.

Mag ons in 2010 nog ’n groeter klub wees met meer uitdagings. Ek sê nog steeds die Karoo marathon kan deur ’n Laingsburger gewen word.

Volgende keer gesels ons oor die nuwe roete vir die 80km en hoeveel wedlope ons op 11 September 2010 gaan aanbied.

The challenges facing the world in the provision of clean water may be daunting, but here are 26 ways you can play your part in conserving water.

A dripping tap could waste as much as 90 litres a week.

Brushing your teeth with the tap running wastes almost 9 litres a minute. Rinse out from a tumbler instead.

Cool water kept in the fridge means you won't have to run the tap for ages to get a cold drink.

Don't use your washing machine until you've got a full load. The average wash needs about 95 litres. A full load uses less water than 2 half loads.

Every time you boil an egg save the cooled water for your houseplants. They'll benefit from the nutrients released from the shell.

Fit a water saving device in your cistern and save up to three litres a flush.

Grow your grass a little longer. It will stay greener than a close mown lawn and need less watering.

Hoeing stimulates the growth of plants, reduces water loss from the soil surface and removes weeds that take up valuable water and nutrients.

Installing a water meter can save you water and money by monitoring how much you use.

Just taking a five minute shower very day, instead of a bath, will use a third of the water, saving up to 400 litres a week.

Kettles should be filled with enough water for your needs but not to the brim. This will reduce your fuel bills too.

Lag your pipes to avoid bursts and leave your heating on a low setting while you are out in cold weather to prevent pipes freezing.

Mulch for moisture in the garden. Adding a layer of tree bark, compost, coconut husks or even newspaper keeps the sun off the soil and retains precious moisture.

No further watering is usually required for established trees and shrubs.

Once a week is all the watering your lawn needs even in the hottest weather. Over- watering can weaken

your lawn by encouraging roots to seek the surface.

Purchasing a water butt will help you to collect rain water for use on the garden.

Question your local garden centre about the water requirements of different plants. Some thrive in drier conditions.

Replacing a toilet cistern can save water. Toilets manufactured after 1993 use less water per flush.

Sprinklers can be wasteful. It doesn't take long for a sprinkler to soak your lawn thoroughly. A sprinkler can use as much water in an hour as a family of four will use in a day!

Trigger nozzles can save water by using it only when needed. This can save up to 225 litres a week.

Very 'water efficient' washing machines and dishwashers are now manufactured. Machines with 'A' ratings are the most economical. You'll find that they save on energy too.

Water your garden at the coolest part of the day to reduce evaporation.

Xeriscape means 'to landscape for water conservation.' The idea is to use plants that require less water. You can also utilise objects for decorative effect such as rocks, bricks, benches and gravel.

You can use less water by turning the hot tap down, rather than the cold tap up, if you require cooler water.

Hoërskool Laingsburg

Menere I Manuel, N Hendricks, C Pedro en mevroue M Swanepoel, L Stadler, S Manuel en B Van Wyk het die Wiskunde oplossingskonferensie die naweek van 4 tot 5 September 2009 te George bygewoon. Hierdie is ‘n groot hoogtepunt aangesien slegs 500 van die 20 000 opvoeders hierdie konferensie kan bywoon.

Meneer I Manuel, C Pedro, mevrou L Stadler en M Swanepoel is tans besig met ‘n Assessor kursus deur Noord-Wes Universiteit.

Laingsburg het vanaf 1 September 2009 sy eie Leerdersondersteuning- en vaardigheids eenheid onder leiding van mevrou CS Pedro. Voorheen was die naaste eenhede Oudtshoorn en Worcester. Al vier skole kan nou hul leerders met leerprobleme na die eenheid stuur waar klem gelê word op die bemeestering van vaardighede. Leerders wat dus nie teoreties sterk is nie, maar wel prakties met hul hande vaardig is, sal nou die geleentheid hê om hierdie vaardig-heid by die eenheid te ontwikkel.

NSFAS het die skool se graad 11 en 12 leerders op 8 September 2009 besoek en UNISA op 16 September 2009 om die leerders in te lig oor beskikbare fondse en beurse om verder te studeer.

TIENERSWANGERSKAPPE OP PLAASLIKE VLAK

Die jeug van vandag is ons leiers van môre, maar met tienerswanger-skappe wat toeneem lyk die toekoms vir plaaslike jeug donker. Tieners word swanger, maar besef egter nie die nagevolge en effekte wat daarmee gepaard gaan.

Vanuit die statistieke verkry vanaf ons plaaslike hospitaal en kliniek is 23 (22,5 %) tieners tans swanger en 12(27%) het reeds geboorte geskenk. Hierdie getalle is verkry uit statistieke vir die tydperk 1 Januarie 2009 tot 31 Augustus 2009. Die ouderdomsgroep strek tussen 14 en 19 jaar oud.

Wanneer jy as tiener of jeug swanger word of ‘n meisie swanger maak, ontneem jy jouself van die volgende: om kind te wees d.w.s jou tienerlewe word deur die swanger-skap verkort, jou vryheid en jou toekomsplanne word beperk. Jy wat selfs ‘n kind is moet dan ‘n kind (baba) versorg met of sonder die hulp van jou ouers en daardie kind se vader. Jy as tienerouers is dan verantwoordelik om hierdie baba te voed, te klee en ‘n veilige tuiste te bied.
Redes hoekom tienerswanger-skappe plaasvind:

Daar is baie redes hoekom tienerswangerskappe plaasvind, maar navorsing het die volgende faktore geidentifiseer wat die risiko van so ‘n swangerskap kan verhoof. Hierdie faktore is ook op toepassing in Laingsburg:

*‘n Swak moeder-/dogterverhouding wat dikwels spruit uit ruwe en die liefdelose optrede van die moeder se kant. Uithuisigheid, drankmisbruik en afgestompheid van die moeder laat die tiener verwerp voel en help mee tot aggressie en opstandigheid. Dit vorm ‘n vrugbare teelaarde vir buite-eglike verhoudings.

*‘n swak vader-/dogterverhouding speel ook ‘n groot rol. Tieners is dan geneig om verhoudings met ouer mans, wat as ‘n vaderfiguur dien, aan te gaan.
*‘n Swak selfbeeld en minderwaar-digheidsgevoel gee soms aanleiding tot ‘n verhouding wat sterk seksueel gekleurd is.
* ‘n Ouerhuis waar ouers hulself aan buite-eglike verhoudings skuldig gemaak het, en waarvan die kinders bewus is, gee maklik aanleiding tot nabootsing van ouers se gedrag en optrede.
*Geen of ongewenste geslagsvoor-ligting, waar ‘n negatiewe en verwronge beeld oorgedra word aan die tiener oor seks en seksualiteit.
*Ontwrigte gesinslewe met min effektiewe bindinge en ‘n gebrek aan sekuriteit.
* ‘n Uitgerekte liefdesverhouding wat nie op die huwelik uitloop nie, omdat die betrokke partye nog nie fisies en emosioneel daarvoor gereed is nie.
*Tieners besluit ook self om seksueel aktief te wees, groepsdruk wat plaasvind, die misbruik van alkohol en dwelms om onafhanklikheid te bewys, onverantwoordelikheid of blote onkunde. ‘n Mens drink tog nie koeldrank uit ‘n brandewynbottel nie.

Voorkoming-maatreëls van tienerswangerskappe:

*“upstain” dit beteken besluit om nie seksueel te verkeer.
*Gebruik voorbehoedmiddels, soos kondome, inspuitings, voorbehoed-pille en ander opsies sluit in nood-kontrasepsie (“morning after pil”) inspuitings kontraseptiewe pil, en die intra-uteriene apparaat.

Tienersmeisies is dikwels te skaam om vir hulself voorbehoed te verkry, maar om voorbehoedmiddele te bekom hoef nie ‘n probleem of skaamgevoel te wees nie. Jy mag wel volgens jouself gereed wees om seksueelaktief te wees, maar is jy gereed om ‘n ouer te wees, wanneer jy nog self ‘n kind is?

Kondome is deesdae orals en gratis verkrybaar, soos by klinieke, polisiestasie, winkels, thusong-sentrums en soms ook skole. Alle klinieke verskaf voorbehoeding aan vroue vanaf die ouderdom van 14 jaar oud. Die voorbehoede pille, inspuiting en kondome kan ook gekoop word by apteke en sekere winkels.

Indien ‘n meisie onbepland swanger word, bied die wet die opsies van pleegsorgplasing, aborsies en aan-neming. Raadpleeg jou ouers, ‘n suster by die kliniek, ‘n maatskaplike werker, ‘n lewensoriënteringsonder-wyser oor die risiko’s voordat jy besluit om seksueel te verkeer.

‘n Deelnemer van Mej Laingburg 2009 het gesê, “Dames hou jul broekkies op”. Dames maak ‘n wyse besluit en volg hierdie deelnemer se woorde.

Laingsburg History

This friendly, modern Karoo village, only 280 km from Cape Town, was almost entirely destroyed by a huge flood only a century after it started The town lies in a geologically fascinating area, steeped in history and tradition. It's a worthwhile and hospitable stop on the busy N1 highway through the Great Karoo.

The warm welcome that awaits tourists in Laingsburg, dates back to the mid-1700s. In those years farmers along the banks of the Buffels River offered hospitality to adventurers brave enough to cross the mountains and venture out onto the arid plains of the Great Karoo. In exchange for news of Cape Town and the civilised world, as well as gossip garnered from other farms along the way, these isolated farmers of the interior offered accommodation, sustenance and fodder.

Many early officials and explorers, such as Barrow, Lichtenstein, De Mist and Swellengrebel, wrote of the people they met in what was later to become the district of Laingsburg. They described the Karoo as "awesome, hot, dry, and dusty. An inhospitable land peppered with friendly outspans, veritable jewels in the desert."

At tiny homesteads dotted about on the vast plains travellers found fresh, drinking water, safe outspans, "a true welcome, homely hospitality and a nourishing meal." Many wrote that "such comforts were offered by God-fearing but brusque men, their shy women and hoards of children."

FOUNDING FAMILY

Many early travellers stayed with Stephanus Greeff, at the farm Fischkuil, near where Laingsburg today stands. These passers-by enjoyed talking with Stephanus and his wife Martha Maria , and listening to their great plans for developing the area. Greeff, considered to be the father of Laingsburg, played a major role in the establishment of the village. At his own expense he built a church. His house was a popular stop.

The earliest travellers praised men such as Greeff who opened their homes and hearts, provided food, shelter, fodder and and oft-times medical care to individual travellers and post coaches users.

EARLIEST CALLERS

Among the earliest callers was Hendrik Swellengrebel, whose father had for a time been one of the governors at the Cape. He returned to Holland with his family, but was unable to settle beneath the grey Dutch skies. He missed the African sunshine .

So, he returned to the Cape and began exploring the hinterland. He wrote about his adventures and commissioned a friend to paint scenes, particularly in the Karoo, so that he could share its magnificence with people in Europe. In 1776 he described a dreadful drought in the Laingsburg area. It forced men to abandon their farms and move closer to civilisation. He wrote of the many abandoned farms and described the hardships faced by those who had sufficient courage to remain on the land.

SEVERE DROUGHT

In his report Swellengrebel stated that even the game had disappeared and at on one long stretch through the "Thouwsgebergte" (the mountains near present-day Touws River) and Matjiesfontein district the drought was so bad he saw only one "korhoen".

He wrote of the weather, thunderstorms and floods, little realising that in 200 years time a town, built in this same area would be fighting for its life against the flood waters of the Buffels River . But, times were not always bad. In De Mist's writings he tells of a delightful five-day long hunt during which seven men in the party each shot 17 eland and a huge variety of other buck.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

In 1862 Stephanus Greeff acquired the farm "Zoute Vlakte" (Salty Flats) . Today the town uses this farm as a source of water. Isolated graves near the old homestead record the passing of those who could travel no further. Among them was Margaret, the first wife of Henry Greene, who became civil commissioner at Colesberg. A devout woman, she became ill on one of the post coaches and had to stay over at Zoute Vlakte for medical attention.

She died. A black granite tombstone marks her grave. It states she died as she lived "secure in her faith in The Lord." The farm had shade and fresh, drinking water. It soon developed into a popular stop. In 1879 Greeff acquired "Vischuil aan de Buffelsrivier" with the specific purpose of starting a settlement. At Greeff's request a portion of this farm was surveyed "for the establishment of a village".

However, before this dream could become a reality a servitude being rerouted. Greeff appealed to John Laing, the commissioner for crown land and public works. He agreed to the rerouting.

JOKES RESULT IN A NAME CHANGE

For a short while the fledgeling village bore the same name as the farm. Later, the settlement was called Buffels River and, when the rail came, the name changed to Nassau to avoid confusion with East London's Buffalo River. Then the name was changed to honour John Laing, whose decision to move a servitude made the creation of a town a reality. For a while the town was called Laings Town. However, in local parlance "town" was pronounced "toon" and, as that was the Afrikaans word for "toe" jokes began to mushroom. A quick change resulted in the village being called Laingsburg before any jokes stuck.

DEVASTATED!

The first erven were sold on April l, 1880. Just over 100 years later, on January 25, 1981, Laingsburg was devastated by a flood. Within a few hours the whole town was under water and residents were fighting for their lives. It was a traumatic time during which 104 people lost their lives and only 21 houses were left standing. Highwater marks are indicated on lamp posts and in the Dutch Reformed Church, one of the few buildings that remained standing.

Others were the railway station, Dutch Reformed church hall, the DRC Mission and the Lutheran Mission Churches, The Magistrates Court and Post Office, as well as a few private residences also survived. But almost all were badly damaged. Most tourists are astounded to learn how high the flood waters rose. Only the roofs of houses were visible. A video tape of the flood can be viewed at the library which also has a collection of photographs and press cuttings covering the devastation. The Voortrekker monument on the south side of the town was washed away. Later as all its blocks were recovered and it was rebuilt.
